About the Author

David Lawrence Jr. retired in 1999 as publisher of the Miami Herald and became a leading advocate for early childhood development and readiness. He chairs The Children’s Movement of Florida, a citizen-led, nonpartisan movement to educate political, business, and civic leaders, as well as parents, about the urgent need to make children the state’s top priority for investment. He has been instrumental in numerous initiatives, including successful campaigns for The Children’s Trust and the 2002 statewide constitutional amendment to provide pre-K for all 4 year olds. Married for more than 50 years, he and his wife, Roberta, have five children and seven grandchildren.

A former president of both the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Inter-American Press Association, Lawrence has 13 honorary doctorates, chaired local arrangements for the 1994 Summit of the Americas, and co-founded a nonprofit vocational-technical school in Haiti.

The author’s share of the proceeds from the sale of each book will go to The Children’s Movement of Florida, which champions early learning, health care, and parenting support.
