Join the Barry University Honors Program for their Fall 2019 Guest Lecture Series

The Nov. 21 edition comes in response to the United Nations Climate Action Summit 2019’s call to develop ambitious solutions. The program focuses on two of the U.N.’s six areas: sustainable and resilient infrastructures and cities, and resilience and adaptation to climate impacts. 

It is titled: Resiliency to climate change through art forms: City of Miami Beach Misael Soto’s "Sand: Amphitheater, Theater, Arena" and "Flood Relief" projects

Guest Panelists for this Lecture

Misael Soto, Oolite Arts, Art in Public Life Resident, received their MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and BA in Art History from Florida Atlantic University. Misael has exhibited at MCA Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Young at Art Museum in Davie, among many others. Misael will speak about art projects commissioned by the Environment and Sustainability Department, City of Miami Beach, Florida and Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places. 
Ms. Susanne M. Torriente, is an accomplished organizational strategist with 29 years of local government experience in South Florida. She joined the City of Miami Beach in September 2015 as assistant city manager and as the City’s first chief resilience officer. Her portfolio includes Planning, Building, Sustainability and Environmental Management, Transportation & Mobility, Economic Development, and Housing & Community Development. Her strength is breaking down complex issues into manageable solutions, fostering collaboration and directing organizational strategic planning. Susanne is a founding member of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Compact staff steering committee, actively participating in Compact activities including the development of the regional climate action plans.  

Susanne has shared her experience and the South Florida story at hundreds of climate, sustainability and resilience conferences around the world over the last 10 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Miami.
