CCSI honors Barry students, faculty, staff, and partners for

On Thursday, March 26, Barry University’sCenter for Community Service Initiatives (CCSI) hosted its 2nd AnnualCommunity Engagement Awards to honor Barry students, faculty, staff, andcommunity partners for their community service participation and achievements.The awards were part of the CCSI’s larger Community Engagement Symposium.

Award winners were nominated by members ofthe Barry community and were chosen by the Community Engagement AwardsCommittee, which consists of various Barry faculty, staff, and students.

Hosted for only the second year, theCommunity Engagement Symposium provides a venue for presentations anddiscussions of community engagement projects, practices, and perspectives. Thesymposium supports the implementation of Barry’s Quality Enhancement Plan(QEP), which is designed to foster personal and social responsibility throughexperiential learning.

The Community Engagement Symposium washeadlined by Barbara Jacoby, faculty associate for leadership and communityservice-learning at the University of Maryland, College Park. Jacoby’s focus atthe University of Maryland is to facilitate faculty development and support forservice-learning and a range of initiatives involving academic partnerships andcivic engagement. A well-known scholar and author, she received the MarylandCampus Compact Scholarship Award in 2010 and previously served as NationalCampus Compact’s Engaged Scholar for Professional Development.

Jacoby’s keynote lecture, “Making Sense ofthe Language of Community Engagement,” explored the field’s terminology todeepen understanding of the complexities of high-quality community engagement.In addition to her lecture, Jacoby also spoke during the award ceremony,stressing the significance of the work Barry’s CCSI does and the importance ofcelebrating community engagement achievements and rewarding faculty throughpromotion.
