BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry University men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw on Friday, but punched their ticket to the SSC Tournament Championship game after defeating rival Lynn 7-6 in a penalty kick shootout.
The Bucs played to a draw for the second time in as many matches, as both teams struggled to find scoring opportunities throughout the game. The Fighting Knights outshot the Buccaneers 14-6, but it was the Bucs' physical style of play that kept applying pressure throughout. Each team saw scattered scoring chances in the overtime periods but to no avail, and would see the game end in a shootout.
The Bucs' Johnny Rodrigues would convert the Bucs first PK attempt and the Fighting Knights would miss their first, but the Buc’s Mark Anderson and Marc Rafols would not find the back of the net, putting the Buccaneers in a big hole.
Guilherme Oliveira and Chase Hanson would each convert and Rodrigues would come up with a clutch save to force the PK Shootout into sudden death.
After each team converted on their next two opportunities, Joao Garcia had the opportunity to lift the Bucs but would miss high and wide.
The Bucs and Knights would trade successful conversions, and after another diving stop by Johnny Rodrigues, it was Connor Randel, the freshman forward, who would lift the Bucs to the championship.
The 24th ranked Bucs will now face off against the Tars from Rollins College in the SSC Tournament Championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm with live-stat and video/audio broadcast available through the Barry University athletic website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM
