Barry University alum Douglas P. Rodriguez ’88 was recently awarded the 2008 Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership by the Florida Department of Education during its Fifth Annual Commissioner’s Summit for Principals. The award ceremony took place Oct. 20.

Rodriguez earned a bachelor’s in history from Barry’s School of Arts and Sciences and an Educational Leadership Certificate from the Adrian Dominican School of Education in 1997. He was honored by the state for his work as principal at Ronald W. Reagan-Doral Senior High School in Miami-Dade, a job he has occupied since the school opened in 2006. Rodriguez’s leadership has played a key role in Reagan maintaining an A school rating since it opened.

During the awards ceremony, Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith applauded Rodriguez’s “tremendous work in fostering learning environments that allow students and teachers to reach their full potential,” and said educators like Rodriguez “serve as shining examples for us as we work to help our children succeed.”

In addition to the honor, Rodriguez received a check for $5,000, and Reagan Senior High received a check for $1,000. Rodriguez was one of three finalists for the award, and was his district’s winner in May.

According to the Department of Education, the Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership recognizes exemplary individuals who spearhead initiatives to increase student performance, promote safe learning environments and establish partnerships with parents and community members.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told The Miami Herald that Rodriguez “is a great communicator, and he has bridged his school well with the city of Doral and the community that he serves. We’re very proud of him. He is somebody to watch in the future.”
