With deep personal sadness, I share with you the news that Sister Arlene Scott went home to God during the night. While her family, her Adrian Dominican Sisters, and I will miss her very much, we are also relieved that Arlene’s suffering and intense pain are over.
Sister Arlene began her ministry at Barry ten years ago as Director of Campus Ministry, then as Assistant Vice President for Mission and Ministry and, most recently, as Assistant to the President for Mission Integration. In the last two years, Sister Arlene facilitated the processes whereby we crafted a new University Mission Statement. She had just begun to plan various activities to help us grow in our understanding of the re-articulated statement and core commitments when she was diagnosed last fall with renal cancer.
I am flying to Michigan this afternoon to represent our Barry community at Sister Arlene’s wake tomorrow night and her funeral Mass and burial on Saturday morning at our Motherhouse in Adrian. In addition to Sister Arlene’s parents and immediate family, we extend our deepest sympathy to Arlene’s local community – Sister Sara Fairbanks, Sister Nery (Luchy) Sori and Sister Pat Siemen.
As a Barry community, we shall celebrate Sister Arlene’s life at a Memorial Mass after Easter.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Barry University Center for Advanced Learning Scholarship in honor of Sister Arlene Scott, OP. For information, contact Tom Severino, Associate Vice President, Barry University, 11300 NE Second Avenue, Miami Shores, FL 33161-6695. May our dear friend, co-worker and sister, Arlene, rest peacefully in the love of God.
Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD
President, Barry University
