In celebrating the accomplishments of the athletics department over the last 25 years, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee presented a timeline chronicaling the exploits of the student-athletes past and present to current Barry president Sister Linda Bevilacqua, current faculty athletics representative Dr. Eileen McDonough, current director of athletics Michael L. Covone and former dean of HPLS Dr. G. Jean Cerra. The timeline is a pictoral account of seven national championships, 27 regional championships, 37 Sunshine State Conference championships, 180 All-America and 180 Scholar All-America winners. In addition, the Bucs have produced six NCAA Woman of the Year finalist, most of any Division II institution and second-most among all institutions. They have had six NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship winners and two winners of the prestigious Walter Byers Scholarship, again most among D-II schools. Andy Havens (left) won the the Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin Community Service Award for his tireless work in the department and the community. Havens started his own program called the "Give-and-Go" where he collects clothing and distributes them directly to homeless people several times throughout the year. He has also volunteered serving food at Camillus House and the Miami Rescue Mission. He has even taken his passion for community service and is helping others to appreciate the importance of volunteering and helping out those that are less fortunate. Last summer, he spearheaded the program to take campers from the BucKids Summer Camp to volunteer and serve meals at Camillus House. Yan Gomes (center) was named the 2009 Male Athlete of the Year. A junior, Gomes has broken the school record for RBI, currently with 83 heading into the last weekend of the season. He is second in the nation in RBI for a team that is ranked second in scoring. He is batting .400 with 18 home runs and 83 RBI and has led the team to a #1 national ranking and 1st place in the SSC. Currently riding a 25-game hitting streak, second longest in school history, Gomes also won the Impact Player of the Year for the baseball team. Princess Bailey (right) and Camilla Pagnan (far right with award) were named co-Female Athlete of the year. Bailey led the women's basketball team in scoring and was second in rebouding, assists, blocked shots and steals. She is the only player in school history to rank in the top 10 in all counting stats. Pagnan, a two-time AVCA honorable mention All-America selection, led the nation this season in kills per set and finished her career with 1,098 kills. She is the the first player in school history to amass 1,000+ kills in just two years. Barry's Professor Neil Miller Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year is split between men's golf and volleyball. Preston Roberts (left) becomes the first non-tennis player to win the male award in six years. A senior on the men's golf team, he carries a 3.765 GPA in sport mangament, he has averaged 74.44 strokes per round and finished tied for fourth at the Buccaneer Invitational as Barry won the team title. Samara Ferreira (right) earned Female Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award. A three-year starter for the volleyball team, she carries a 3.967 GPA in biology and plans to attend medical school after graduation. She was second on the team in blocks and fifth in kills this past year as Barry went 15-12. The softball team walked away with the CHAMPS/LifeSkills competition for the second straight year. Rowing placed second while women's soccer came in third. Below is a list of all award winners:
