Ernie Long, a retired police officer from New Jersey with more than 25 years of service, will speak to students, faculty and staff at Barry University about crime prevention. Long was first certified in crime prevention in 1983 while employed as a police officer in New Jersey. He served the state as a patrolman, detective and sergeant. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Long became an investigator. He was later promoted to assistant chief investigator. In 1996, following his retirement, he moved to Florida.
Long, a regular speaker for the Miami Jewish Federation and the Aventura Marketing Council, has an extensive background in crime prevention. He teaches related courses throughout the state to both private and public organizations, including the Governors Hurricane Conference, Florida Human Resources Association and the State of Florida Environmental Protection Department. Long has also taught courses for organizations such as AARP and the National Rifle Association.
As a certified workplace violence instructor, Long has served in many capacities including fire safety instructor, National Incident command system instructor and Homeland Security Assessment Model Assessor. Recently, Long also taught at two national crime prevention conferences in Washington, DC, and Atlanta, GA.
In 2006, Long, was recognized at the Crime Prevention Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony for his commitment to crime prevention by Florida’s state attorney general. He also received a Dade County Law Enforcement Officers Charitable Foundation for Crime Prevention in 2002. In 2003 and 2004, Long was nominated for a Leo award. He currently serves as a member of the National Crime Prevention Coalition and is a certified trainer for the National Crime Prevention Council.
