MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Athletic Department announced today the hiring of Henry Apaloo as the full-time assistant coach for the Men’s Soccer team.
"I have been a part of the Barry University soccer program for about six years now and hopefully I can use my experience to assist coach McCrath to continue to produce winning teams. We have set our goals pretty high this year with 17 players returning. After winning the conference tournament last year, one of our goals this year is to win the conference outright. Secondly, we want to improve and move further in the national tournament.”
Henry Apaloo begins his first season as a full time assistant coach after an incredible career as both a player and coach for the Buccaneers.
In his two year stint as Steve McCrath’s graduate assistant coach, Apaloo helped the team to a 25-12-2 record. In 2008, Apaloo’s Bucs came out of the gates with a torrid 9-1 start but faltered late in the year and lost in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. In the 2009 season, Apaloo helped coach the team to their first ever SSC Tournament Championship, their first birth in the NCAA Tournament since 2003, and his first appearance in the NCAAs as both a player and a coach.
Apaloo was a four-year letter winner for the Buccaneers from 2004-2007. During that time, Apaloo helped the Buccaneers to a 35-27-3 record. Apaloo made an immediate impact for the Bucs, starting all 16 games as a freshman, scoring three goals and seven assists. Apaloo continued his success as a sophomore with two goals and four assists. During the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Apaloo led the team in both goals and assists, scoring 11 goals with seven assists in 2006 and seven goals with five assists in 2007.
Apaloo was a two-time All-SSC selection and the first ever Buccaneer selected to the Daktronics All-South Region Team. He closed out his career as an offensive standout earning 68 points, 23 goals, 22 assists, and seven game-winning-goals.
The Bucs start the regular season against the Lander Bearcats at home on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
