MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Barry University head baseball coach Marc Pavao has announced the freshmen class of his 2011 recruits. Of the five freshmen joining the squad for the coming season, three are pitchers and two are infielders.

The freshmen pitchers include two local recruits in Edgar Sanchez and Calvin Rayburn. Sanchez is a righty from Belen Jesuit Preparatory High School. Sanchez helped his team to district championships in 2007, 2009, and 2010, and a regional championship in 2007. “Edgar is an extremely talented pitcher whose fastball sits in the mid to high 80’s,” Pavao said. “He throws three pitches for strikes and is a tremendous competitor on the mound.”

Rayburn, also a righty, joins the Bucs from Archbishop Curley where he was an Honorable Mention All-Dade player and the school’s athlete of the year. In his senior campaign he pitched in 57 innings with 89 strikeouts. “Calvin has a live arm with potential to develop into a top prospect,” said Pavao.

The final freshman pitcher to join the staff is LHP Matt Gordon. Gordon attended Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine. During his career, Gordon earned First-Team KVAC, All-Academic KVAC, and First-Team All-State Honors. In his senior year, he went 5-1 with a 1.14 ERA while hitting .460 and slugging .700. Gordon also played hockey at Edward Little High, recording a successful career.

In addition to the pitchers, two infielders, Andrew Dodgson and Adrian English, join the squad this season. Dodgson comes from Gorge Jenkins High in Lakeland, Florida. As a senior, Dodgson played in 21 games and recorded a .357 average. He drove in 24 RBI and recorded nine extra base hits in route to being named a Polk County All-Star. “Andrew is a left-handed hitter with a very smooth swing,” Pavao said. “He hit and pitched in high school but will work as an infielder at Barry.”

English is the final freshman to join the Buccaneer team for the coming year. English is a local player from Pace High School in Miami. As a senior, he hit .477 with nine homers and 30 RBI earning First-Team All-Dade County. “Adrian is a clutch hitting infielder who can play both second and third, “Pavao said.

In addition to the five freshmen Pavao has signed, a number of transfer students will be joining the team in 2011. Follow gobarrybuc.com for information coming soon.
