DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped a heartbreaker at the buzzer 75-73 to the Nova Southeastern Sharks in Sunshine State Conference men’s basketball action in the University Center on Wednesday night.
Rob Huntington tipped in a Teddy Tassy miss with :00.4 seconds left for the Sharks (10-4, 3-1 SSC), who won for the seventh straight game.
The Bucs (4-9, 1-4 SSC) led 22-13 with 9:51 left in the first half when Zack Trapp hit a three-pointer in transition. But NSU responded with a 17-0 run to go up 30-22 on a three-point play on the fastbreak by John Brooks with 4:10 left.
After taking a 36-30 lead into the break, the Shark led the entire second half until Bryan Van Cott nailed a three-pointer with :06.7 second left. Van Cott had cut the lead to one point, 71-70, with a trey at the 1:26 mark, but Brooks had answered with a base-line jumper with 1:01 to play. After the teams traded misses, the Bucs had the ball with :20 second left and chance to tie. But Derrick Bolanos turned the ball over, giving the Sharks a chance to ice the game. On the ensuing inbounds play, Trapp stole the ball, lost it to Tassy, stole it back and hit Van Cott for the tying three-pointer. Tassy, after a pair of time-outs, took the ball the length of the court, but missed a short contested jumper. Huttington tipped in the miss for the win.
Huttington had 17 points for the Sharks, while Alex Gynes led all scorers with 23. Willie Whitfield led the Bucs with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Evan White came off the bench with 16 points, 13 in the second half, while Van Cott had 12 points and Trapp added 11.
The Bucs travel to Melbourne, Fla., on Saturday, Jan. 15 to face off against the Florida Tech Panthers in the Clemente Center at 4:00 pm.
