New health sciences campus opens in city of Hollywood

Barry’s off-site programs breathe new life into old firehouse

Barry University and the city of Hollywood gave new life to an old firehouse by converting the empty space into classrooms for health profession students. On Friday, Jan. 13th at 1 p.m. university and city officials will commemorate the opening at 421 North 21st Ave., with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Hollywood City Commission, including Mayor Peter Bober, will welcome Barry University president, Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP. PhD., and Barry community members to the city.

Barry’s College of Health Sciences relocated two graduate health profession programs, Anesthesiology and Biomedical Sciences, to Hollywood. The renovated 10,000-square-foot space, houses new offices, classrooms and a digital lab for faculty, staff and students. The campus will include a simulation center that provides realistic opportunities for nurse anesthesiology students to practice their skills before entering surgery.

As one of Hollywood’s newest neighbors, Barry students and faculty will provide the city’s residents with community programs that emphasize health education, risk prevention and wellness. Throughout the year, health seminars and screenings will be offered at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center at 2030 Polk Street.

The partnership is part of an “Eds and Meds” economic development strategy. Funding for this project was provided in part through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Neighborhood Stabilization Program and Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency in partnership with the City of Hollywood. The one million dollar build out will be repaid by the university and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency through a ten year development agreement.
