Baptist Health honors The Art of Nursing through photo exhibit and donation to Barry

Following a four-year tour of South Florida galleries and hospitals, a compelling black-and-white photo series by photographer Fareed Al-Mashat depicting The Art of Nursing will soon find a permanent home at Barry University.

Baptist Health South Florida, originator of the exhibition, has announced that it will donate the series of 15 framed, oversized photographs to the university’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences department.

“While our nursing students are immersed in their studies on campus, the emotions captured in these photos will remind them of the all-important human element of their chosen career,” said John McFadden, Ph.D., CRNA, dean of Barry’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “We are grateful to Baptist Health for providing this means of motivating and inspiring our future nurses.”

A public exhibition for the series will take place from August 26 – September 4 at Andy Gato Gallery at Barry University (located in Thompson Hall, second floor). The gallery will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public and parking is available in the visitor lot at Barry University’s main entrance. The photos will be housed in a permanent location on the campus following the public exhibition.

“Baptist Health South Florida is the region’s largest provider of expertise in nursing practice, and we depend on Barry’s College of Nursing to provide highly qualified graduates to join our workforce,” said Deborah S. Mulvihill, MSN, RN, corporate vice president & chief nursing officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “We are pleased to share these photographs with one of our most valued community partners.”

The Art of Nursing recognizes the dedicated women and men who pursue nursing careers in the 21st century.

“These images are my way of honoring our work, and they express my gratitude for being part of such a noble profession,” said Yvonne Brookes, R.N., a Baptist Health nursing executive who conceived of and curated the photo series.

The photos capture the admirable traits of real-life Baptist Health nurses, who work in a variety of specialties and range from novices to experts in their profession. Photographer Fareed Al-Mashat used a cinematic eye to capture the realities of life as a nurse.

“Because of the limitations of shooting in a hospital setting, patient privacy issues and the ever-changing daily challenges facing nurses, using a true photojournalistic approach was not feasible. Instead, I envisioned these images as a split second in a film sequence and worked hand-in-hand with Baptist Health nurses to create scenes that feel as authentic as if they were shot by a photojournalist.”

A broader series of Al-Mashat’s nursing photos were featured in a 2013 book, also titled The Art of Nursing. Baptist Health will donate copies of the book to the university, as well.
